Homecoming Week!

I'll start by saying sorry for not blogging all week, but due to all the crazy homecoming competitions here in the office it's been hard to find time to blog.  This week has been pretty interesting in and outside of the office. I learned very quickly that the women in admissions are more competitive than most women! They take office competitions very seriously, so without a doubt I jumped on board and got in the homecoming spirit too. We decorated the office in a Vegas/NMSU theme. Different people came up with some pretty good ideas and the office came out looking really good. Fingers crossed, I hope our door wins. We also had to decorate head dresses and sunglasses in Vegas themes as an in-office competition. At first, I'm not going to lie, I planned on taping a feather to my sunglasses and calling it cool. After a little motivation I decided to give a little more effort and actually put some creativity into my glasses. They actually came out looking pretty good.
Besides all the creativity in the office I had to come up with a sweet Halloween costume too! Like my dad used to always tell me in basketball practice, "Go hard or go home." Soooooo....I decided to go hard:) I crossed out the Wolverine and Spiderman costume idea, and chose to be Pee Wee Herman this year. He always gave me a creepy feeling growing up but I also wanted to have all the things he did. I thought it would be so cool to have furniture and toys that talk back to me.
Aside from all the fun this week, I did have some school work to take care of. I had a big test on Monday in my engineering class. I felt very confident that I did well after taking the test, but I did study my butt off. Fingers crossed, hopefully I'll get an A! I also have a big presentation that I have to work on this weekend. It's going to be tough to manage my time with Halloween and homework, but I'm sure I'll figure it out:)
I'll leave you with another favorite quote of mine that my dad used to always tell me, "Anything worth having, is worth working hard for." Have a happy and safe Halloween!!!

Physics...Not as scary as it sounds

As an Environmental Science major, I saw little need to take Physics in high school..in fact I thought I wouldn't have to take it at all! So when I arrived to NMSU and I received my course requirements, I was a little shocked to find that I had to take Physcis. Not just Physics, I had to take Engineering Physics! A little intimidated, I opted to get this class over with this semester and I walked into it preparing myself for failure because I had no background in Physics and I assumed that I would be completely LOST in Engineering Physics none the less. I was going to give it my all, but I was going to punish myself if I ended up having to take it again to get a better grade.

Right from the get-go, I did all my assigned homework and sought help when I didn't understand a problem or concept. I attend my professor's office hours religiously every week and I feel as if that shows her how dedicated I am to succeeding in her class and how important it is to me. Of the two exams we've had so far, I have received a grade in the 90s. I am very proud of myself and so is my professor. I have not once used that excuse that I have no knowledge of Physics because if you really do put in the extra effort it's basically impossible to fail a class. Out of this, I have gained an interest and liking for Physics. I want to stress how important I feel it is to get to know your professors. Establishing a repoire and getting to know them will only help you in the long run. Many times, professors can introduce you to internships or job opportunities. Also, if you know them better, they are more likely to be lenient on you and help you out in case you have to miss an exam or class. I hope you all can use my experience to inspire you to get to get to know your professors. We spend a lot of money on our tuition, so let's get the most out of it.

And on that note, I you everyone has a great weekend :) Get excited for homecoming next week!!

Ciao!

Post-midterms and it's a Wednesday afternoon

So it's now October 20th and we've now been going to classes for 2 months. I'm definitely in that comfortable place where I don't dread going to class and it's just a part of my daily routine. Now that midterms are over, some students become a little "too comfortable". I still attend all my classes and do all my homework, but I have become a little more nonchalant about being sure I am prepared well in advance for all my exams and homework assignments. I feel like I've got the hang of all my classes; I know what's expected of me and how professors work. So maybe I don't take this comfortableness as seriously as some students do. I have noticed that a lot more people are not coming to class and turning in assignments late. What I'm trying to get at is that it's really important to stay on top of everything even during this time. I know we don't have the excitement of classes just starting or the anticipation of them ending any time soon, but try and still give classes your 100% even during this slow time during the semester. If you don't stay on stop of things now, studying will be that much more challenging come time to prepare for finals week.

So on this lovely Wednesday afternoon with absolutely nothing out of the ordinary going on, I'd like to leave you all with a quote from Robert Collier "Success is the sum of all efforts, repeated day in and day out." So instead of unnecessary trips to Taco Bell at 2 am, go to sleep early so you can be well and rested to perform your duties as a college student.

Peace out :)

Tubular Tuesdays

Today I was walking through Corbett to grab some lunch with my amiga Hannah when what did I spot…a gigantic friggen sign that said “GRAD FAIR”! This is the conversation that followed:
Elaina: “OMG Hannah do you know what this means!”
Hannah: “Elaina are you graduating in December or May?”
Elaina: “December!”
Hannah: “Well today is the day then!”
I was not super excited to hear about any of this!  Then I get back to the office and hear an ear full from good ole Jodi! She’s like “G-Wizz Elaina you’re so lucky to be done!” However I do not feel the same way.  Now I have to think of my graduation as a “real occasion”. I need to order invitations and make sure to call my brother and ask him if he knows where he left his cap and gown! Oh the dramatic pressures of being a super senior.

Whattta Weekend!

This weekend was huge for New Mexico State and me! Where to start...where to start?!? First, the Admissions office put on an amazing day for all those up and coming Aggies.  Aggie Experience was a huge hit, over 750 students came to campus and was introduced to everything from residence halls to the wonderful grill cheese sandwiches at TAOS. Current Aggies provided a big help volunteering to give campus tours and speak about their own experiences studying here at NMSU. A big thanks to everyone that was able to come and all of those amazing volunteers.

Second, a big congratulations to our Aggie football program they beat the University of New Mexico Lobos 16-14 on Saturday evening! What a fourth quarter! Student tailgating was also on and poppin! There were at least four different DJs at all different areas of the extravaganza, amazing food, and some really awesome school spirit all over campus on Saturday afternoon!!!

Sunday afternoon was a little less exciting.  It was another long day at the library getting ahead for the week.  I am glad that I have started this little regiment on the weekends.  It’s only taken eight semesters but I am finally all caught up during the week and can really just enjoy my week days this semester!:)

Doin' Work!

Typically, I am the biggest procrastinator around. I feel like my best work is done when I am under pressure, so you will see me the night before an assignment is due, frantically trying to finish it! However, I made a vow to myself this year to prevent any unneeded stress in my life, and actually do my homework ahead of time! With the help of a day planner and a little extra motivation, I am now on top of things and getting some work done.

In college, it is especially easy to get behind in your classes. Since no class is scheduled back to back, there is always an opportunity to put off homework for at least one day. It is also easy to get side tracked and want to do other things like hang out with your friends or even just have an evening of relaxation! Both spending time with your friends and allowing some R &R time is important, but imagine getting to do those things without subconsciously worrying about the ten page paper you should be writing.

A word of advise for all you future Aggies: Finish your homework and studying ahead of time to maximize the enjoyment of your free time and minimize the stress in your life. If you need some help learning how to successfully manage your time, you can always check out our Student Success Center in Hardman! Have a great rest of the week everyone!

Starting off on the Right Foot!

Happy Monday Everyone!
For most, Monday represent the worst day of the week. But why? Why start out a new week that is full of potential and opportunity, with a bad attitude?! Therefore, I challenge you to make the most out of all of your Mondays, and the most out of everyday you are given!

Driving to class this morning, it hit me that I was in such an amazing mood. I had a great weekend, despite getting very little sleep, but was ready to knock out another week of learning and working!  It also helped that I got to start off my week by going to my favorite class of all time! The Las Cruces air was chilly walking to Biology, but it made for a refreshing walk on down to Hardman Hall. After an hour of lecture, I went and turned my lab report in and was off to work!

When the talk of the "Mondays “comes up, people generally are just complaining about having to go back to their job. This is actually really sad, and I feel fortunate to work in a place I enjoy and work with people that I can relate to. Today at work we prepared more materials for Aggie Experience, which is this Saturday on our campus! Hope all of you prospective Aggies come on out and see what "State'' has to offer! But back to the subject matter, instead of dwelling on all the negativity that Monday brings, such as having to wake up early and spend all day in class or work, focus on the wonderful education your receiving or the difference you’re making in a person's life by doing your job!

Have a Wonderful Week,
Peace & Love-
Jodi
